The Modern IED Threat

Major Matthew Marcinkewycz
Officer Commanding 20 EOD Squadron

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are a pervasive threat on the asymmetric battleground. They have been used throughout modern military history with varying effectiveness. They are a relatively low cost and easily constructed weapon, capable of tactical and strategic results.
During the second Iraq War, IEDs were reportedly responsible for 63% of coalition forces KIA. The configuration of IEDs is only limited by the capability and imagination of the of the “bomb builder”. Accordingly, there can be no step-by-step guide to the detection and disarming of these devices. Therefore, explosive ordnance disposal personnel must be well trained to render these devices safe and dispose of it. Obviously, this is challenging work and MAJ Marcinkewycz will provide insight into Australia’s capability in this area.

Access to Victoria Barracks Brisbane requires that all attendees be registered for the lecture and to have their name checked off a list at the entrance to RUSI Hall.
