A Focus on the Region - Australia and China: conflict of interests?
Mr Graham Fletcher, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
In a speech in March 2016, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, reinforced the strategic importance and potential of the Australia-China relationship. She said ...there are enormous opportunities for us to diversify our trade and our engagement with China to complement what is happening in China. The Coalition Government has embraced deeper engagement with China and other countries through what we call “economic diplomacy.”
In the second of a series of presentations examining Australia's security in the region, Mr Graham Fletcher, First Assistant Secretary in the North Asia Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs, will explore Australia's complex but vital relationship with China.
Mr Fletcher has considerable first hand experience of the Australia-China relationship, having served three postings to the Embassy in Beijing (1986-88, 1997-2000 and 2004-08) and a period as lead negotiator for the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement. He has also served in Noumea and Washington.
