ACT: History Seminar Series: Western Front: Fromelles/Pozières and Beyond

USI of the ACT is pleased to advise members that the Royal Australian Artillery Historical Company will present the latest in its Firepower Seminar Series at ADFA@NSW on Wednesday, 31 August.  The seminar is entitled Western Front: Fromelles/Pozieres and beyond.  A pre-seminar reception (cash bar) will be held in the Auditorium foyer from 1630 to 1730 hours, while the seminar itself will run from 1730 to 1930 hours.

Opening Remarks: Air Vice Marshall Mel Hupfeld AO DSC

Master of Ceremonies: Brigadier Phil Winter AM CSC

Speaker: Major Trevor Watson RAA

  • Topic: Evolution of Royal Artillery tactics and employment through the Great War
  • Analyses the momentous changes to the BEF's artillery tactics, command and control, and structure during the Great War from lessons learned leading up to and in the major battles of 1916.

Speaker: Major (retired) Darryl Kelly OAM, RAA

  • Topic: Lieutenant Thurnhill: direct fire amid the wreckage of Pozières
  • Studies the wartime actions of Lieutenant Thurnhill and other soldiers at Pozières.

Speaker: Air Commodore (retired) Mark Lax OAM, CSM

  • Topic: The first air observation posts
  • Describes the importance of aerial observation to direct artillery fire. Considers the limitations or wireless telegraphy and innovations adopted to overcome communication challenges.

Speaker: Rear Admiral (retired) James Goldrick AO, CSC

  • Topic: Jutland and the Advent of Over the Horizon Warfare
  • Examines problems of navigation, communications, command, control and firepower in the North Sea at the dawn of the Radio Age 1914-1918.
